Driver Licence Codes (Endorsements)

If convicted of a motoring offence, the Court can endorse your licence with penalty points or order a period of disqualification.  If your penalty points reach, or exceed, 12 in a 3 year period, you are liable to be disqualified.

Endorsements remain on a licence 11 years from date of conviction if the offence is :-
bulletdrinking/drugs and driving ( DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80)
bulletcausing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (CD40,CD50 and CD60).
bulletcausing death by careless driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis (CD70).

or 4 years from date of conviction if the offence is as listed below :-

bulletreckless/dangerous driving (shown on the licence as DD40,DD60 and DD80), other drink/drugs offences (DR40, DR50, DR60, DR70 and DR90).
bulletoffences resulting in disqualification.
bulletdisqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed.
bulletor 4 years from the date of offence in all other cases.

At the appropriate time you can apply to remove your endorsement(s) from your licence by completing a D1 application form available from Post Offices.

The Sentencing Codes

Most people are familiar with the more common punishments; fine, points, disqualification.  However, the subject's licence (or licence history) may also bear a sentencing code after the endorsement.  The following codes apply:

A  Imprisonment

C  Suspended Sentence or Imprisonment
E  Conditional Discharge - Maximum 3 years
F  Bound Over (to keep the peace)
G  Probation - minimum 1 year, maximum 3 years
H  Supervision Orders
I  No separate penalty
J  Absolute Discharge
K  Attendance centre.  Minimum 12 hours, maximum 24 hours
L  Detention centre.  Minimum 3 months, maximum 6 months
M  Community Service Order
N  Remand Home accumulative sentence (Scotland)
O / Q  Parent or Guardian order, section 7(7) 1969
P  Approved School
R  Borstal
S  Bound Over
T  Hospital / Guardianship order
U  Admonition
V  Young Offenders Institution
W  Care Order
X  Detention of Child under s 58a, Children & Young Persons Act 1937 as amended (Scotland only)
