Motor Insurance Database The EU Fourth Directive The Motor Insurance Database (MID) was created to
provide a record of all insured motor vehicles in the UK in order to comply with
the 4th EU Directive of Motor Insurance. The Directive requires that insurers of
all vehicles are readily identifiable by a designated Information Centre using
only the vehicle registration number. The database for privately owned vehicles
went live in July 2002 with both fleet and motor trade vehicles to be added from
January 2003. A "fleet policyholder" includes every person or company with a policy covering multiple vehicles, including motor trade policies and companies who consider themselves to be "self-insured" but have an underlying insurance policy for third party risks. MID holds, to include fleet data, about 27 million vehicles. However, not ever fleet owner has submitted their vehicle data. It is the policyholders responsibility to provide and update the vehicle details. Non-compliance with the Regulations is a criminal offence and the maximum penalty for not submitting data is a fine of £5000. MID also addresses
Temporary Additional Vehicles; any vehicle
which is is held by the for 14 days or more must be registered on the MID. A
motor trader must submit all the vehicles passing through their hands if they
hold them for more than 14 days. All trade plates have to be registered as well. The MID does not change the law on liability or coverage, or
the terms of the policy. Third party claims will always have to be paid. Vehicle
notification may be a condition of the motor trade policy i.e. if you fail to
update the MID an insurer may not pay out damage claims. |
